Influence of Wall Proximity on the Lift and Drag of a Particle in an Oscillatory Flow

چکیده
We report on the lift and drag forces on a stationary sphere subjected to a wall-bounded oscillatory flow. We show how these forces depend on two parameters, namely, the distance between the particle and the bounding wall, and on the frequency of the oscillatory flow. The forces were obtained from numerical solutions of the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. For the range of parameters considered, a spectral analysis found that the forces depended on a small number of degrees of freedom. The drag force manifested little change in character as the parameters varied. On the other hand, the lift force varied significantly: we found that the lift force can have a positive as well as a negative timeaveraged value, with an intermediate range of external forcing periods in which enhanced positive lift is possible. Furthermore, we determined that this force exhibits a viscous-dominated and a pressuredominated range of parameters.

Overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows
An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...
متن کاملComparison of Lift and Drag Forces for Some Conical Bodies in Supersonic Flow Using Perturbation Techniques
Numerical methods are not always convergent especially in higher velocities when shock waves are involved. A comparison analysis is performed to study the supersonic flow over conical bodies of three different cross sections circular, elliptic and squircle (square with rounded corners) shaped using Perturbation techniques to find flow variables analytically. In order to find lift and drag forc...
متن کاملInfluence of Torque on the Lift and Drag of a Particle in an Oscillatory Flow
In [1] and [2] we computed the lift and drag forces on a sphere, subjected to a wall-bounded oscillatory flow. The forces were found as a function of the Reynolds number, the forcing frequency, and the gap between the particle and the ideally smooth rigid bounding wall. Here we investigate how the forces change as a function of the above parameters and its moment of inertia if the particle is a...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Air Flow around the NP Car Using the Realizable k-ε Turbulence Model to Predict Aerodynamic Forces and Moments
In this study, a numerical computational fluid dynamics study is conducted in order to predict the aerodynamic forces on the NP car. The turbulent air flow around the car is modeled using the realizable k-ε model. First, results are validated against those presented for the Ahmed’s body. Next, the fluid flow around the car is simulated for different car speeds ( to mph) and fl...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of hydrodynamic properties of Alex type gliders
Simulation of an underwater glider to investigate the effect of angle of attack on the hydrodynamic coefficients such as lift, drag, and torque. Due to the vital role of these coefficients in designing the controllers of a glider and to obtain an accurate result, this simulation has been studied at a range of operating velocities. The total length of the underwater glider with two wings is 900 ...
